JEWISH LIFE

Our aim is to showcase Jewish life in Europe in a positive and effective way and to make its history and culture, which goes back over two millennia, accessible to a wide audience. As a society-wide association, we place an emphasis on networking within Europe.

NETWORKING EUROPE

We place an emphasis on networking within Europe. Through our work, we aim to stimulate a pan-European and interreligious exchange across society, political and media discourse, civil society engagement, and the exchange of experiences between Jewish and non-Jewish actors across European countries and Israel.

STRENGTHEN DEMOCRACY

With our work, we want to stimulate a pan-European, interreligious exchange across society, political and media discourse, civil society engagement and the exchange of experiences between Jewish and non-Jewish actors and institutions from EU countries and Israel.

This is intended to positively counteract the anti-Semitic and racist indoctrination of European society and promote solidarity with Jews. This includes strengthening Jewish voices within the European majority society in the present and future.

QUOTES

Founding members have their say

"In the '1700 Years of Jewish Life' celebrations in Germany, we have seen that there is great interest in the history and present of Jewish life. Judaism is just as firmly anchored in European culture. With this initiative, we want to ensure that this knowledge is spread as widely as possible."

Dr. Josef Schuster
President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany

"Jewish life is an important part of European history and the present. Unfortunately, hatred of Jews and conspiracy myths are still a reality throughout Europe today. With the association, we want to help ensure that Jewish life in Europe has a future and that anti-Semitism is finally a thing of the past."

Katarina Barley
Vice-President of the European Parliament

"Promoting Jewish life and combating anti-Semitism is a Christian duty for me. That is why I am happy to support the association Jewish Life in Europe e.V."

Bishop Dr. Bätzing
Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference

"I am delighted that the important work of the anniversary year is being continued with the founding of the 'Jewish Life in Europe' association. I am honored to be able to join the association as a founding member, which is also an expression of heartfelt solidarity. We are standing up resolutely and with united forces against anti-Semitism and for Jewish life."

Dr. h.c. Kurschus
Chairwoman of the Council of the Protestant Churches in Germany

"Cologne is home to the oldest documented Jewish community in Central and Northern Europe. The fact that Jewish life in Cologne is still alive and formative for this city today was impressively demonstrated and experienced during the year of celebrations marking 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany. I am therefore very pleased that the new association will also operate from Cologne, i.e. from the heart of Europe, and will be a strong voice for Jews in Europe."

Henriette Reker
Lord Mayor of the City of Cologne

"Very often, Jewish life in Germany is associated with the darkest stories, with the Holocaust or with current anti-Semitism. It is important to deal with this, because Jewish life must continue to be possible in Europe. But the history of Judaism in Germany and Europe is longer, more diverse and more varied. And with this association, I hope to make this diversity the norm."
